Outside Boulder

As we were leaving Boulder one day, it was raining pretty hard. I’m pretty sure a lot of people stop at this same point to take pictures of this valley and the “hills” (their words not mine… anything taller than 100 feet is a mountain in Texas [in my mind]). But I just thought the rain was so beautiful that I didn’t really care if it came across as a Kodak moment or not.
This is a satellite image (and now a street-level view [updated: 6/3/07]) of the exact spot I stood to take this photo. The dirt area to the left of the road is where we pulled off, and you can see the stream running alongside the road due West of this spot. GoogleMaps is awesome.

Was it raining all over, or in the upper right? The river makes the image…
Last year in Kauai I was on the beach trying to take a picture of a moonsoon thingy, and when I got my color slides I back I was disapointed by the results - however, when I shot some rain with b&w it turned out like I wanted…

Yeah, it was just in the upper right. Rain is so notoriously difficult to shoot. I know exactly what you mean.

Real nice Walker. I’ve had the same thing happen - very appetizing in person only to find wysiNwyg!

Love the details in this photo.

Yeah, I think too that the river makes the image. Also love the rainy mood and the dark trees in the background.

This reminds me of some of the photos you see from early settlement expeditions in the western US… mid-late 1800s. Vast views, previously unseen by European eyes. The sepia tone and slightly fuzzy, flared-out look adds to that feel here. Nice to see someone using the venerable Rolleiflex Automat as well.

The light reflected by the meadow is a wonderful touch. I like the atmosphere…
