My mother used to work on this big IBM typesetter thing, an early word processor (no screen, an automated typewriter I guess)  where you typed in a bunch of formatting characters and then the machine spat out your final copy. It used these for different fonts and things. The damned thing sounded like a machine gun when it did its thing.
