Golf Course

I’d like to print these really big. Like on 32×40 in. paper, because there’s a great amount of detail to this particular image. You can see a little detail on a golfer walking across the course in the negative.

Very nice… I love the fall-off in the foreground. Having seen the negative I think this shot is worth the 32×40.

This one’s really cool… Did you cause the vignetting on purpose?

Yeah John, I’m tilting the front standard upward (which, consequently, is the only way I can tilt it, and there’s no swing).

It’s as good as a puffy mint. Better.

So, how do you like shooting with that rig..? I’m obsessing over a hand-held 4×5, can’t decide if it’s worth the trouble to get an old Graflex or wait until I can afford a Linhof or something like a Littman.

I like it, but it’s limiting. But limits have always been good for my photography. There’s no rear standard anything (since it’s a press camera) and I don’t have anything but my standard 80/2.8 for it, so it helps me focus on the image more instead of the camera. And I’m getting used to using it now, so I’m getting faster. Plus, it uses roll fim, so I get more exposures for cheaper. And it’s certainly a lot easier to carry around than my big 4×5.
But honestly, I don’t handhold it, even though it has a rangefinder built in (which isn’t calibrated, unfortunately). So I can’t speak to the “handholding-ness” value of it. Plus, since I use the ground glass to focus, I have to remove that to place the film back on there.
Most of the Graflexes I see on eBay are of the 4×5 variety, but I think one of these 6×9s goes for over $200 usually.
